This weekend, Cijay and I decided to leave Mia with our parents and take the day to go adventure by ourselves. We decided to hike down to Wailua Falls and it was so much fun! Surprisingly it was both of our first times hiking down to the falls, but I’m more shocked that Cijay has never done this since he was born and raised here.
I was definitely a little nervous going in to this hike, first because neither one of us have been down it before, and second because it’s slightly dangerous. It is a very steep hike where you spend most of the time climbing your way down the mountain completely vertical. There is a rope that has been tied to the trees to help propel you down, but with it being muddy, it still felt very slippery and dangerous.
Keep scrolling down to see more photos and also see a video that we put together of our whole experience!
(Just so you can get an idea of how far we had to crawl down this mountain, this picture was taken at the top of Wailua Falls where we started the climb!…And yes, we made it all the way to the bottom in the water)
It was a little unclear to know where to start the hike since this isn’t a marked trail or even an advertised hike. But, thanks to our friends who have done this before, we found our way by good directions.
Anytime we go hiking Cijay always goes barefoot. I usually laugh at him because I feel like he looks like Tarzan or something just trekking through the woods with no shoes on and this hike was no different. Once we started the climb down the mountain, I started questioning my shoes, so I gave in and listened to Cijay and took my shoes off to continue the climb and I have to admit, it really was a lot easier! I felt like I was on an episode of Man vs. Wild, haha (yeah, I know, I’m dramatic!). The climb down really isn’t very far, but it takes a while because you have to go slow to ease your way down the mountain (well at least we were slow moving), for those that are more experienced at this, you could probably move at a much faster pace.
Once we finally made it to the bottom it really was magical!…As cheesy as that is to say, it’s true! It was so peaceful and beautiful there! Naturally I made Cijay stop and take like a million photos, but lucky for you all, I only posted a few haha. After a few photos we jumped in the water, swam around and played behind the waterfall! I seriously felt like a kid, it was so much fun! It’s not very often you get a chance to take in the view of the world from behind a waterfall!
(Cijay is getting better at taking these candid photo moments that end up making me feel like a model! Haha I guess I’ve trained him well.)
…And here we are, finally back at the top, both of us barefoot and muddy! It was a great day getting to spend some quality time with just Cijay and I, explore a part of this island we’ve never been, and also get a good workout in! Don’t forget to watch our video down below and see the whole experience!
