I finally got to live out my Blue Crush dreams this past weekend when my hubby took me surfing for the first time! It’s funny because I grew up in a town right by the beach in Florida where surfing was really popular, but when I was in high school I was more interested in wakeboarding than surfing. Now that I live in Hawaii, I felt there was no reason why I shouldn’t try surfing, especially because my daughter Mia has SO much fun learning to surf as well! If you didn’t know already, I used to be obsessed with the movie Blue Crush (okay, I still might be) and I have to admit that movie might have been the biggest reason I wanted to learn to surf, haha.
We’re lucky that there is a great surfing spot right around the corner from our house, with tiny waves for beginners like me! We had to all ride in Cijay’s truck, so that we could bring our board, although it wasn’t really our board, we had to borrow our friends longboard since we don’t have one, but after this day I might be going to buy my own!
(Thank you to Aunty Tabby for Mia’s adorable bathing suit!)
Mia was so ready to go surfing! We have been taking her out on the body board for a little while now to ride the waves and she LOVES it! We didn’t take her out on the waves with the surfboard, but she did get to ride her body board and we took her on the river with the surf board to learn how to paddle and stand up!
Cijay spent a little time going over some basics with me before I got in the water, I honestly don’t know anything about surfing! Even though Cijay isn’t a professional surfer or anything, he still knew enough information to give me good directions and even get me up on my first wave!
My first baby wave! I was so proud of myself! Even though I’m used to balancing on a wakeboard, this felt very different to me. Once you find your balance though, I feel like you have it after that! I also didn’t realize how exhausting surfing is! No wonder all surfers are in killer shape! Paddling out was the hardest part for me haha.
We were all pretty exhausted by the end of the day and clearly you can see Mia didn’t make it much longer than this! haha. We had so much fun and I can’t wait to get back out there and try it again! If any of our professional surfer friends have any tips for me or even want to come with me one day and help me out, I would love it!!!
