Our biggest reason for moving to Kauai was so Mia would be able to grow up with her family, but our second reason was because we wanted Mia to grow up somewhere that she could spend majority of her time exploring the great outdoors and Kauai just happens to be one of the most beautiful places to explore! Once we moved here to Kauai we decided to take our love of adventure and start a family tradition where every weekend we would get outdoors and explore a new spot on this beautiful island. It is a great way for us to spend quality family time together while enjoying the outdoors. It is helpful that my husband was born and raised here because he knows all the ins and outs of this island, so it’s like we get our own personal tour guide while exploring!
This week I will be sharing our adventures to the stone dam on the Wai Koa Loop Trail on the North Shore. We are always looking for areas to explore that are family friendly and easy to navigate since our little girl is only 16 months old. The area at Wai Koa is very family friendly and has a lot to offer. It is located right near the Anaina Hou mini golf course. You could definitely spend the whole day there with your family. There is a mini golf course, playgrounds, skate park, farmers market, cafe, bike rentals, botanical gardens, and the 4.5 mile trail! These areas are also dog friendly as long as dogs stay on leash and there is even a dog park along the trail if you wanted to let them run around.
We didn’t do the whole 4.5 mile loop, we walked about half way through the trail to where the stone dam was and then back. It is a flat trail the whole way, so very easy to walk with your kids. We let Mia walk by herself for majority of the time, it took a little longer that way, but we want her to get comfortable with walking trails and keep her active. I honestly didn’t mind taking our time because the views along the trail are so beautiful that it was nice to just stop and take it all in.
Mia LOVES animals, so she was pretty excited that we got to stop and say hi to some of the horses along the trail, okay fine, maybe I was a little more excited!
Once we made it down to the stone dam, it was just as beautiful as I had imagined. It is a peaceful area to have a picnic and even take a little swim.
There is a walkway that leads you to the top area of the dam and I think this might have been my favorite part. Something about it brings you back to your childhood days, maybe it’s the rope swing! It was a fun area to take a dip in the water and relax.
This bridge was giving me all the Dirty Dancing feels, so of course I couldn’t leave this area without taking at least one picture!
We had such a great day and all together spent about 4 hours there. If anyone wants to know more about this area and you have any questions feel free to message me! I can’t wait to share our next adventure with you!
